BGOV OnPoint: House Panel Examines Reining in Big Tech Immunity – Bloomberg Law

Frances Haugen, the former Facebook product manager-turned-whistleblower who disclosed internal documents earlier this year, will testify at a Dec. 1 hearing focused on limiting big technology companies’ protection from lawsuits related to user-generated content.

Section 230 of the 1996 Communications Decency Act (part of Public Law 104-104) has been credited with the creation of social media and the rise of services such as Twitter Inc. and Meta Platforms Inc.‘s Facebook. Judges have interpreted the liability protections broadly, shielding companies even in cases where they allegedly helped develop unlawful content.
