Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu makes resignation decision after crunch meeting

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has decided against stepping down from his position following a crunch meeting in Catalonia today. Pressure has been mounting on the 57-year-old after a series of controversies.

A lengthy board meeting took place on Monday afternoon, two days following the club’s 3-1 loss to Real Madrid.

Spanish media had suggested that the president may offer his resignation.

But Bartomeu wants to help lead the fight to turn the club’s fortunes around, on and off the pitch.

However, because a censure motion has been brought against the chief his position is still not safe.

A vote of club members is due to take place at the Nou Camp on November 1 to decide if Bartomeu should be replaced.

His position has come under intense pressure following a series of damning events.

Barca wasted their advantage at the top of the La Liga table last year, allowing Real to steal the title.

Star player Lionel Messi attempted to force his way out of the club this summer and put it in writing his desire to leave.

Bartomeu stood in the six-time Ballon d’Or winners way and ensured he remained under the instruction of Ronald Koeman.
