FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta has told wonderkid Ilaix Moriba that he can leave the club as the teenager plays hardball over a new contract.

The 18-year-old broke into the Barca first team last season, making 14 La Liga appearances and earning plenty of praise.

Having switched representation, his new agents are trying to push for a huge new contract for the midfielder, but cash-strapped Barcelona are unwilling to meet his demands.

Barca have offered him a new contract, but Laporta has made it clear that the club will not be bullied into meeting his demands and, with one year left on his current contract, he will be allowed to leave this summer if he has an appropriate option.

‘We will try to make sure that his case is not repeated anymore,’ said Laporta, via the Sun. ‘He has one year left on his contract and does not want to accept the club’s conditions.

‘We do not accept that and we want to send a message to the team. If you do not want to renew, we have other solutions. What we don’t want our players made at La Masia who don’t want to renew.

‘He’s a player we’ve given opportunities, but the club is above all. I would like you [Moriba] to think again.

‘We cannot allow him to be promoted and then leave. We won’t accept that with any player. If he wants to go and it’s because he has other options, he can leave the club.’

Chelsea are interested in the midfielder, as are Bayern Munich, and both will be weighing up whether to move for him this summer or try and wait to get him on a free transfer in 2022.
