The Arena Nationala hosts Atletico Madrid vs Chelsea

The fixture, originally scheduled to take place in the Spanish capital, has been relocated to Romania due to coronavirus-related travel rules, and marks the first meeting between the clubs in three seasons. The teams met twice in the group stage of this very competition in late 2017, with Chelsea winning one of the clashes and the other ending in a draw.

The Blues enter tonight’s fixture undefeated under Thomas Tuchel, who joined the Premier League side in January, having gone through the Champions League group stage unbeaten before Frank Lampard’s departure. Tuchel is out to go one further with Chelsea than he did with Paris Saint-Germain last season, when the Ligue 1 side were beaten in the final of the tournament by Bayern Munich. But La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid pose a stern challenge here, having recovered from an opening-round thrashing by Bayern to go undefeated through the remainder of the group stage this term – alongside their fine domestic form. Follow all the build-up, live match updates and post-game reaction from the Champions League last-16 first leg between Atletico Madrid and Chelsea below.

Kick off: Chelsea get the match started. Marcos Alonso gets forward on the left wing and tries to bring a diagonal ball under control. He chests it down and the ball runs away from him allowing Atletico to gain possession. Joao Felix makes a run through the midfield and is clipped from behind by Mason Mount who picks up the first yellow card of the game.

Chelsea were one of only four teams to win all three of their away games in this season’s group stages, alongside Atalanta, Barcelona and Juventus; they also scored more goals on the road than any other side (10).

However, their last away win in the knockout stages of the competition dates back to March 2012 against Benfica (1-0).

We’ll be facing a team with a coach that has managed to get every side he has taken charge of to play attractive football.

“He has come to a club that have a lot of financial power and who always make good signings

“This season they’ve signed some excellent young players and since Tuchel has arrived they’ve improved their results a lot.

“But their squad speaks for itself, just look at the quality of their three goalkeepers, that proves their power, and their attacking players could get in any team in the world.”

Chelsea are the last team to beat Atletico on their own turf in European competition – it was in September 2017, Atletico’s first European match at their new Wanda Metroplitano stadium (1-2).

Chelsea were trailing for a grand total of four minutes during this season’s Champions League group stages, less than any other side. Also, only Manchester City (one) conceded fewer goals than the London side (two) in the group phase.

Diego Simeone has never lost a home match as Atletico manager in the knockout stages of the Champions League. He’s won nine and drawn four.

Atletico have only conceded one goal in their last 12 Champions League knockout ties at their Vicente Calderon/Wanda Metroplitano stadiums, that was against city rivals Real Madrid in May 2017 (2-1).
