Arsenal’s £22.8million bid plus Matteo Guendouzi for Atletico Madrid star Thomas Partey has been rejected by the La Liga giants.

Mikel Arteta is determined to sign Partey, the Ghana international, as he wants greater solidity at the base of his midfield.

Guendouzi, 21, hasn’t featured for the Gunners since being dropped from Arteta’s squad following a 2-1 defeat to Brighton in June.

The Frenchman escaped a ban after grabbing striker Neal Maupay by the throat after the full-time whistle and reports claimed the midfielder mocked Brighton’s players by telling them he earned more than ‘they ever will’.

Arteta has therefore decided to discard of Guendouzi and the Gunners submitted an offer of £22,8m for Partey in a move that would have seen the Frenchman move to the Spanish capital.

However, Atletico turned down the offer and are not interested in Guendouzi, according to Get French Football.

Partey has a £45m release clause in his contract in Madrid and the La Liga giants do not want to sell the midfielder, meaning Arsenal would have to activate the clause to get their man.

However, according to the report, Arsenal are unwilling to do so as their finances will not allow them to fund the deal given their eighth-place finish in the Premier League.

Guendouzi, for his part, is not especially keen on a move to Atletico as he believes that he can break into Barcelona’s side.

Barcelona are interested in the midfielder and reports this week claimed a swap deal involving Philippe Coutinho had been discussed.
