Arsenal transfer roundup as Gabriel questioned plus latest Mesut Ozil move

By the time the summer transfer window was finished, Arsenal had addressed many of their major needs.

Willian provided depth across the attacking positions, Dani Ceballos returned on a second loan, while Gabriel was the monstrous centre-back who could help rebuild the defence.

And then, on deadline day, the Gunners made the long-awaited move of the window, securing defensive midfielder Thomas Partey from Atletico Madrid.

These moves helped assemble a squad that is capable of challenging for a top-four finish and maybe more.

Mikel Arteta has made progress in his first year as head coach and manager, and now he is starting to enjoy the talent to challenge the very best in English football.

With the season underway and the deadline passed, reflections of the summer window are prevalent, and there are reportedly several more players that Arsenal missed out on.

With that in mind, as well as an update on the club’s highest-paid player, here is the latest transfer round-up.

Mikel Arteta with new signing Thomas Partey

Mesut Ozil, Sokratis left out of Premier League squad

After being almost entirely excluded from the Arsenal set-up since Project Restart, both Sokratis and Mesut Ozil have been left out of the Gunners’ 25-man Premier League squad, meaning neither can represent the team until January.

Ozil played every league game under Mikel Arteta prior to lockdown, but has not featured for a single minute since, with Arteta consistently repeating that it is a tactical decision to omit the German World Cup winner.

Sokratis has been excluded by Arteta, too, though there are no suggestions that this is due to attitude-based problems.

If either was to leave before the end of the summer window, their options are limited.

Portugal’s transfer window is open until October 25. Russia is also an option, as is Qatar or MLS, with their windows not closing until October 25 and October 29 respectively.

Ozil won’t play for the club again

Celtic received one offer for Odsonne Edouard

Despite reported interest from Arsenal, per the Athletic , Celtic received just one written offer for centre-forward Odsonne Edouard.

The report states that the one offer came from a German club and was well below Celtic’s desired valuation. Aston Villa and Crystal Palace reportedly made their interest known to the Scottish champions, while Arsenal never even made contact.

Edouard has scored 50 league goals since arriving in 2017 and attracted interest from across Europe.

Edouard is in the final two years of his contract and may be available next summer, with Celtic forced to sell if they want to recoup value for their former club-record signing.

Micah Richards questions Gabriel

Despite making an impressive start to life at Arsenal following a summer switch from Lille, Micah Richards has questioned the quality of centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes.

“Arsenal’s defence still bothers me – is Gabriel the right standard? – but it is evident they are moving in the right direction,” Richards wrote in the Daily Mail.

Gabriel was signed for £22million and has largely drawn positive reviews for his performances thus far. Nevertheless, Richards obviously feels that the 22-year-old might not be up to the required standard of a team chasing a top-four finish, which he says should be their aim.

He added: “When you add in that they have just signed Thomas Partey – what an unbelievable piece of business that could prove, as the Ghanaian was outstanding for Atletico Madrid – Arteta has got a lot of quality to choose from. Arsenal, really, should be looking at the top four.”
