Arsenal set price for Bernd Leno as Mikel Arteta prepares squad overhaul

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is open to the prospect of selling Bernd Leno this summer, according to reports.

Emiliano Martinez lay down the gauntlet with a string of excellent performances in Leno’s absence towards the end of the 2019/20 season but went on to complete a move to Aston Villa last summer after being told the German would keep hold of the No.1 jersey.

Leno performed adequately for Arsenal last term, missing just three matches as the north London outfit ended with the third best defensive record despite finishing down in eighth place in the Premier League.

However, the 29-year-old goalkeeper is deemed to requirements, with Arteta looking to overhaul his squad ahead of the forthcoming top-flight campaign.

Leno completed a £22.5million move from Bayer Leverkusen to the Emirates three years ago and the Gunners would be prepared to let him leave for a similar price or even for a slightly lower fee, according to The Mirror.

Arsenal have identified Ajax’s Andre Onana, 25, as a possible replacement for Leno between the sticks.

The Cameroon shot-stopper is ineligible to play until November due to a doping ban but is reportedly available for just £5million.

Speaking last month, Leno – who has two years remaining on his current contract at the Emirates – played down mounting speculation he could be set for a summer move.

‘I am still happy at Arsenal,’ he told Sky Sports.

‘Arsenal is still a big club, a big name in the world and in the Premier League.

‘There is nobody in the dressing room who says: “I want to leave the club, I am not happy here anymore!”‘

Despite the rumours, Arteta insisted Lenon ‘belonged’ at Arsenal when discussing the Germany international’s future last month.

‘It’s another one with a contract here that because of the length of his contract, a lot of things will be speculating,’ Arteta said.

‘He has two years here and he belongs here.’
