Arsenal’s hopes of signing Lautaro Martinez are seemingly dead in the water, with Inter Milan reportedly ruling out the Argentine’s departure as they prepare to lose Romelu Lukaku to Chelsea.

Widespread reports suggest Lukaku has informed Inter of his desire to return to Stamford Bridge – where he feels he has unfinished business – and the Champions League winners are expected to get their man should they launch a third bid in excess of £100million.

Lukaku’s strike partner, Martinez, has also been heavily linked with a move to England this summer and Arsenal have been credited with a strong interest as Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen his attack for the forthcoming season.

Martinez is said to be open to the prospect of joining the Gunners and it was thought Serie A champions Inter could be prepared to listen to offers for the 23-year-old given their financial struggles and attempts to balance the books.

Last month, around €60million was generated from the sale of Achraf Hakimi to Paris Saint-Germain and it looks increasingly likely Lukaku will follow the Moroccan out the exit door, despite Inter’s owners promising no more ‘big’ departures.

According to Sky Sport Italia, Inter are now resigned to losing Lukaku but Martinez will be staying put, with the Nerazzurri and new head coach Simone Inzaghi unwilling to lose two key attacking players before the transfer deadline.

There has been no shortage of interest in Martinez. The report claims both Arsenal and Atletico Madrid made approaches for the attacker and Tottenham also considered a move amid the uncertainty over Harry Kane’s future.

But the speculation surrounding Martinez appears to have been put to bed and Inter hope to resume contract negotiations with the Argentina international before the end of the summer, with his current deal due to expire in 2023.

Martinez has scored 49 goals in 132 games since arriving at the San Siro from Racing Club back in 2018.

The forward has had an enjoyable few months at both club and international level, first lifting the Scudetto with Inter before helping Argentina to Copa America glory.
