Manchester United forward Anthony Martial believes he is on course to play again this season, despite Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s assertion that the Frenchman is out for the rest of the campaign.

Martial injured his knee on international duty last week after pulling up in France’s win against Kazakhstan.

While initial reports suggested Martial came through unscathed, further scans have revealed damage to the forward’s knee and he missed Sunday’s 2-1 win against Brighton.

Speaking before the win against the Seagulls, Solskjaer said: ‘Unfortunately, he sprained his knee with France.

‘It’s always when they go away on internationals… you can keep your fingers crossed and hope they come back fit.

‘Losing Anthony for what might be the rest of the season is very disappointing, especially when reports from there [France] was that it wasn’t anything serious but it looks a bad one.’

Martial is wearing a knee brace but he is not expected to have surgery on the issue and ESPN report that the former Monaco ace is confident of returning before the season finishes.

That would be a timely boost for United, who have problems in attack.

Edinson Cavani is out of form, while Marcus Rashford is playing through the pain barrier with a shoulder issue.

Mason Greenwood has slowly recaptured some of his best form in recent weeks and he scored the winner against Brighton on Sunday night.

United face Granada in the quarter-finals of the Europa League on Thursday and Solskjaer is hopeful that Rashford will be fit after he was removed 20 minutes from time against the Seagulls to be replaced by Daniel James.
