'An insulting token gesture': Boris Johnson announces £1,000 grants for 'hard-hit' pubs – Manchester Evening News

Wet-led pubs that have been forced to close or had their trade severely reduced by coronavirus measures will receive extra cash from the Government.

Boris Johnson announced the news to MPs today, saying the money is there to ‘recognise how hard they have been hit’.

Pubs that don’t serve food have to remain closed in both Tier 2 and Tier 3 areas from tomorrow.

As national lockdown ends, that means that the majority of wet-led pubs across England aren’t able to reopen.

The Prime Minister has today announced that each will receive a one-off payment of £1,000.

Mr Johnson said: “Today we’re going further, with a one-off payment of £1,000 in December to wet pubs – that’s pubs that do not serve food.

“Recognising how hard they’ve been hit by this virus in what is typically their busiest month.”

The decision to place Greater Manchester in Tier 3 has been described as a ‘kick in the crotch’ for the hospitality industry.

Wet-led pubs here won’t be able to reopen until the region reaches Tier 1.

People have already commented that the £1,000 payment isn’t enough for businesses that have been so badly impacted.

Manchester Central MP Lucy Powell said: “Pubs will take this money but it’s not enough to stop them going bust.

“Still leaves the total cash grant to these businesses less than half what they received in March/April/May, when their cash reserves stronger.

Greater Manchester night time economy adviser Sacha Lord tweeted: “I don’t want to sound ungrateful, but Boris Johnson has just offered our wet led pubs 1k.

“1k will NOT save most of the 1806 wet led pubs across Greater Manchester. Our community pubs, most of which our in our most deprived areas.

“It feels like an insulting token gesture.”

“It’s only Tier 3 not Tier 2 as briefed; nothing for restaurants.”

One user tweeted: “That will help them survive until next Tuesday at least… these people have no idea how much it costs to maintain a business.”

Another said: “Wow don’t strain yourself Doris”
