Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana has admitted that he would be open to a move to the Premier League at the end of the season amid speculation linking him to Manchester United and Tottenham.

The 23-year-old has emerged as one of the most highly-rated young goalkeepers in Europe over the past couple of seasons, impressing during Ajax’s run to the Europa League final in 2017 and Champions League semi-final last season.

There were reports this week that Spurs were considering a £35m move for Onana as they seek a long-term replacement for 32-year-old Hugo Lloris, while United are also believed to be monitoring developments.

Onana played for Ajax during their dramatic 4-4 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday and although he stated afterwards that he is happy in Amsterdam, the Cameroon international acknowledged he’d move on eventually.

‘There’s good competition and everyone wants to play here [in England] but to play you need to get a chance,’ he told BBC Sport.

‘The Premier League is not for everybody so we will see. Now, I am with Ajax and I am happy to be the first-choice goalkeeper.’

He added: ‘It’s always important for me to move on. I am not going to stay here forever but now I am focused, so let’s keep it this way.

‘I am happy to play for Ajax. I am happy to play for a big club but we will see what will happen at the end of the season.’

Lloris has been Spurs’ first-choice goalkeeper since 2012 when he joined the club from Lyon and while he has been a success in north London he has made an increasing number of mistakes over the past few seasons.

The World Cup winner was at fault for Neal Maupay’s opening goal during a 3-0 defeat to Brighton in October and is currently sidelined with a dislocated elbow injury sustained during that incident at the Amex.

United’s interest in Onana is more surprising considering they convinced long-term No.1 David De Gea to sign a new long-term contract in September following months of speculation over his future at the club.

Onana joined Ajax from Barcelona’s academy in 2015 and has gone to make 160 appearances for the club.
